February 2000: Alvin Williams Traded, Not Traded
On February 9th, 2000 Alvin Williams along with Sean Marks were traded to the Boston Celtics for Danny Fortson. Two days later, the trade was rescinded as Williams failed to pass the physical because of his wonky knees.
At the time this was a bit of an embarassment for the franchise but what really rocketed this Dubious Raptor Moment (tm) up the charts was the fact that 18 months later the franchise would reward Williams with a 7-year, $42 million contract. Better yet, because of the failed physical the franchise could not insure the contract which made Williams all the more untradeable when his body finally gave out 2.5 seasons later.
For the $42 million, the Raptors got 215 games out of the Alvinator. At least the money will keep him in solid gold crutches for years to come. Come to think of it, why can't the Raptors claim the contract as a charitable donation?
