June 2004: Raptors finally hire Sam Mitchell
The only event to qualify for both the 50 Dubious Raptor Moments and the upcoming (and long-awaited, I might add) 50 Ironic Raptor Moments is the hiring of Sam Mitchell. One year before Mitchell’s eventual signing, Glen Grunwald ignored a request from Antonio Davis that he consider the then Milwaukee Bucks Assistant for the teams coaching vacancy; hiring Kevin O’Neill instead. The decision triggered an unexpected, interconnected series of events:
- Pissed off by a further perceived slight by the front office, the Raptor co-captain publicly complains about the team—leading to Davis being traded
- Pissed off by perceived deficiencies in the roster, O’Neil publicly complains about the GM’s decisions—leading to Grunwald being fired
- Pissed off by perceived undermining by his coach, Grunwald publicly complains about his unprofessional off-court behaviour—leading to O’Neil being fired
One year later, new GM Rob Babcock hires Sam Mitchell as coach.
